December 7, 2016

Hi Everyone!

Wow!  Our trip to NYC is almost here!

Please send in any balances due for the trip by December 10th.  Thank you.

Also, please confirm if you want tickets for the tour of Radio City.  The tickets are $13.50 per person.  I want to be sure out count is correct.  If you are a dancer or parent attending the Rockette Experience, your tour ticket is included.

Here are some trip details:

We will leave the studio at 7:00 AM on Friday, December 16th. No need to arrive before 6:45 AM.  All seats on the bus are reserved. Yes, I put your with your friends or family!  You may bring pillows, blankets, food, small coolers, Christmas DVD's, etc.  You may leave anything on the bus for the weekend.  The bus and driver go to NJ and hang out there for the weekend.  Buses aren't allowed to stay in Manhattan, since there is no room for buses to park.  Hopefully, we will be in the city by 4:00-5:00, depending on traffic and weather.  You will have the rest of Friday to do as you wish.

We will do a quick pick-up of one person in the Portland area, stop at the Kennebunk Rest Area on 95 for a quick bathroom/coffee/snack to go, another quick pick-up and bathroom/food-to-go stop in the Hartford area and on to NYC!  These stops need to be as quick as possible, so if you buy food, plan on taking it on the bus or bring your lunch and snacks.

We will be delivered to the hotel, The Travel Inn on 42nd St between 10th and 11th.  On 43rd Street, is Rescue 1, which is one of the elite rescue squads in NYC.  Right after 911, we did an musical benefit for NYC at Peakes Auditorium and that is where we delivered and donated the money.  They lost 11 out of 12 of their firefighters on September 11th.  It is a nice place to visit and they do sell NYC fire fighters hats, shirts, etc.

I suggest packing as light as possible.  Bring comfortable walking shoes or boots because we do a lot of walking!!  Also, bring warm clothes, especially hats, gloves, boots, etc.  It can be freezing when the wind blows up those streets in NYC and the sun is behind the tall buildings.  The nights get cold.  Don't forget your glasses, contacts, contact solution, any medication needed, phone charger, money, credit cards, emergency info, ID, etc.  DO NOT carry your purse behind you.  Put your wallets in your front pocket.  This is NYC, not Hermon, Maine.  Be smart and street wise.  I have never had any problems in NYC, but everyone needs to be award of their surroundings.  TAXIS DO NOT STOP FOR YOU, SO DON'T STEP OUT IN FRONT OF THEM!!

We will all go to the 9:00-10:30 AM show at Radio City Music Hall, The Christmas Show Spectacular.  You will all LOVE it!!  Plan to be in the building by 8:30 AM.

I will give you your tickets when you are on the bus.  For those early risers, you can go to the taping of the morning shows, like the TODAY SHOW, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, etc.  After the show, you are free for the rest of the day and evening, unless you are going to the Rockette Experience.  You will have about 1.5 hours before it begins.  That's a good time to get something to eat.  It is held at Radio City.

A fun place to go is Ellen's Stardust Diner on 1650 Broadway.  It has singing waiters and waitresses who are want-to-be actors and actresses, set in a 50's style.  Lots of fun and not overly expensive.  It's kind of like a mini musical.

There is so much to do and see in NYC and impossible to take it all in in a weekend.  There are lots of free places and activities going on and also some with admission fees.  The museums are great and of course, there's Central Park and the Central Park Zoo plus Bryant Park.  The windows are trimmed beautifully on 5th Avenue, check out Rockefeller Center, the ice rink, the tall, tall Christmas tree-don't miss those.  You can go to the top of the Empire State building, but you do need tickets.  Not lack of places to shop and Macy's is huge!  St Patrick's Cathedral is open to the public.  If you do a double decker bus tour, dress warmly!

The new 911 Memorial is in lower Manhattan, where there are also good views of the Statue of Liberty.  Then, there's NY style cheesecake, pizza, street pretzels and the list of yummies goes on.  Subways aren't too tough to navigate.  Do pay attention to where you end up because there are certain areas you should stay out of in parts on NYC.  Go online and Google as much as you can about NYC before you leave, so you know ahead of time what you want to do and see.

Melody has posted info about NYC on our Facebook page.  There are some great outside markets, craft show, etc.  One is at Washington Circle and another one is inside Grand Central Station.  The hotel is not far from the Intrepid Air and Space Museum.  Broadway shows are amazing!!!  So, fill in every minute.  You can always sleep on the way back.

Dancers who are taking classes at Broadway Dance Center, check out their schedule online and we will make some decisions about which classes we want to take.

On Sunday, the day is free until we leave about 1:00-1:30 PM.  We will set a time to be back at the hotel, depending on our checkout time.  And poof!  Just like that, the weekend will be over and we will be heading back to Maine with Christmas only a week away!  We arrive home somewhere around 11:00-midnight, if nothing unforeseen happens.  That's why you need your pillow and blanket.

If you have any questions, please contact me immediately by email or studio phone-848-5083.  Remember, all payments are non-refundable because that's the way the tickets, hotel and bus work.   Once it booked, it's done deal.  I can't get the money back and the commitments have all been made at this point.

Such great memories we will be making very soon!!!!

Please respond to this email with "Got It-NYC!"  Then, I know you have all received this info.  Also, please pass this email on to others of your family or friends attending the trip.

See you at the studio at 6:45 on Dec. 16th.  You may leave your vehicles at the studio while we are gone.

The Saturday dancers will come to the HS that day and rehearse on stage.

Preschool class-9:30 AM at Hermon HS.  You will have time to leave after rehearsal and come back to Hermon HS at 12:30 PM.

This is not a dress rehearsal, so just regular dance clothes are fine.  No Acro is performed in the Holiday shows.

After the girls practice on stage, they will have time to change, have hair and make-up done, etc.  However, to save time, it is best to come with hair and make-up done.  Then, you can just touch up the make-up before the show.

Here is the info for the Holiday show.

The show will be Tuesday, December 20th at 6:00 PM  at the Center Theater.

All dancers will come at 4:45 PM to rehearse and will wear their costumes.  I realize this is at dinner time, so bring them a snack and feed the dancers before rehearsal.  Because of the age of the dancers and it being a school night, we need to do the show as early as possible, but also let parents get our of work.  Always a balancing act!

Their costumes will be given out in class.  Please make sure all costume payments are paid, otherwise the costumes are not able to be given to the dancers.  Tuition also  needs to be current.  PLEASE PUT THEIR NAMES ON EVERYTING!!

There will be classes on Dec. 7th and 14th and rehearsal and show on the 20th.

December 1, 2016

Hi Dance Families,

The Festival of Lights Parade is this Saturday.

Here is some important info about the Festival of Lights Parade.  This is open to all our dance families from all locations.

Please read all the information!!  Thanks.

Festival of Lights Parade-Saturday, December 3rd, 4:30 PM, Downtown Bangor.

We have a float in the Festival of Lights Parade for any of the dancers who would like to take part.

Attire for anyone on the float, including parents:

  • White sweatshirt over very warm snow clothes.  You  may take a white sweatshirt that has writing on it and turn it wrong side out or buy one at AC Moore, Walmart, etc.
  • Red gloves or mittens
  • Santa Hat wrapped with white battery operated light around the white fur part.  Usually places like the Christmas Tree Shoppe, RiteAid, Walmart, etc., have battery operated lights.  Some Santa hats even hat lights on them.  Some Santa hats are thin, so put an extra hat, headband or earmuffs under their hat.
  • We will provide a green scarf for the parade, to be returned at the end of the parade to us. Wear a turtleneck to keep the neck warm.
  • Wear warm boots.  Bring a blanket to wrap up in or sit on.

The parade starts on Exchange Street and ends at Davenport Park, which is across from the Homeless Shelter on Main Street and back side of the new Bangor Police Station.  You MUST be there to pick you child up when the float arrives at that drop off point because we can't keep the float there until the end of the parade.  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.  WE DO NOT WANT ANY CHILDREN WAITIING FOR THEIR PARENTS, SO PLEASE BE THERE WHEN WE ARRIVE WITH THE FLOAT!

One parent of a preschooler may ride on the float with them and the others are old enough to ride alone because of the other adults on the float.  Parents may walk beside the float.  Bring a flashlight, if you are going to walk with us.  You may ride, if there is room, but the kids come first.

Please send an email telling us if you will be having a child and/or parent on the float.  It's fun for the dancers to be part of the parade.  Thanks!!

Riding on the Float-Arrive between 4:00-4:15 PM.

Dance Team-Arrive by 3:45 PM

We will be told on Friday where we are in the line-up and where we start, so look for an email by Friday night.  The float has big signs that say Morita's School of Dance, so we are easy to find and it will be hauled by a truck.  It is not a tractor trailer bed.  Remember, traffic is crazy and they shut off the streets in certain areas, so you may have to walk quite a distance to get to the float.

See you then!!  Call or email with any questions.

To our Parents and Dancers.,

In celebration of Halloween week, we will start on Monday with the classes starting at 5:15 and invite any dancer to wear their Halloween costume to class this week.

Please wear costumes over your dance clothes, so costumes can be removed, if they get too hot or uncomfortable to wear in class.

Classes from 5:15 and later on Monday, Oct. 31st, will be rescheduled.

There will be classes on Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31st until 5:00 PM.  This is when the Monday 3:30-5:00 classes will wear their Halloween costumes.

All other classes may wear their costumes starting on Monday, 5:15 through the Saturday classes on October 29th.

We can't wait to see everyone's costumes!

October 20, 2016

Just a reminder costume payments are due by October 22nd, as stated in the registration packet.

$68.58-- 45 Minute or One hour class per week

$110.78--90 Minute class per week

$137.16--2 hours a week

$200.00 deposit--2 1/4-4 hours a week

$300.00 deposit--More than 4 hours a week

Dancers who take multiple classes will have multiple costumes.  We always try to find costumes with some wearable pieces for those who take multiple classes.

We put lots of time and effort in to our decisions for each class and each costume choice.  Every dancer has to be measured and fit into the costume chart sizing for each costume company.

Of course, not each company has the same sizing chart, so it's very time consuming.  Costumes are not returnable, but can be exchanged if the sizing is not correct for $8.00-$10.00 per costume, depending on which company.

We will use the costumes for the Holiday show on December 10th, as well as the Spring show on May 20th.

You may pay for your costumes with check, credit card or cash.  If we do not have your credit card number on file, you may fill out the credit card info form at the studio and put it in the secure payment box or send the info by email.  Heather French, bookkeeper and office manager, will handle all costume payments.  Costumes will not be ordered for any dancer until the costume payment is received.

Thanks!

October 11, 2016

Hi Dance Parents,

We are hosting a trip to New York City through the dance studio.  Here is the info on the trip to NYC the 16-18th of December.  This trip would make a wonderful, cherished memory of a Christmas present which never goes out of style, is out-grown or ends up hanging in the closet!

We can take 54 people on the bus.  We are only taking one bus.  (This trip is not designed for children under 5, because it is a long bus ride for children of that age)

We will all be attending the 9:00 AM show at Radio City Music Hall to see the Christmas Show Spectacular on Saturday, December 17th.  This gives you the rest of the day to do whatever you wish-shop, sightsee or take in another Broadway show!  If you have never done the tour of Radio City Music Hall, I strongly suggest taking The Stage Door Tour.  It's very fascinating.  If you have a ticket for the show, the Stage Tour Door is only $13.50 pp.  I  need to reserve the tour tickets in advance.  Did you know Radio City Music Hall was almost torn down many years ago?  Fortunately, this beautiful structure was saved from destruction.

Tickets for the Christmas Spectacular-$85.00 per person, 9:00 AM, Saturday, December 17th.

Rooms:  We will be staying at the Travel Inn on 42nd Street between 10th and 11th.  This is not the Hilton Midtown luxury, nor is it the price to stay at the Hilton.  It was clean, reasonable size rooms for NYC and convenient.  This is walking distance to Broadway Dance Center and Times Square.

We have stayed here before and it is a great location.  If you've ever checked out NYC hotel prices, you will know these are very reasonable.  Staying in the city is so much easier than staying in New Jersey.  A lot of time is lost by traveling back and forth to NJ on Public Transit, so with our limited time, NYC is the better choice!

Room Rates for 2 nights:  All rooms have 2 double beds and are non-smoking.  These prices include all taxes.  If you wish to have your bags handled by the staff, it is $5.00 per bag, not included in these prices.  Pack light and carry your own bag!

Quad-4 in a room-$135.00 pp (total for 2 nights)

Triple-3 in a room-$170.00 pp (total for 2 nights)

Double-2 in a room-$240.oo pp (total for 2 nights)

Chartered Bus-Includes price per person and tip for the driver.

$115.00 per person, all ages.

We will leave early Friday morning from the studio on Friday, December 16th.  For those who wish to take in Broadway shows, we will arrive in the city in the afternoon on Friday, as long as we don't run into any traffic jams, accidents or bad weather.  We can't positively guarantee the arrival time.  We will check into the hotel and the rest of the day is yours.  We return the night of the 18th.  We usually leave the city about 1:00 or 2:00 PM and that gets us home about 11:00 PM, unless something unforeseen happens.

You may bring small coolers that fit under the seat, food, pillows and blankets on the bus.  It is a private charter, so you may also leave items on the bus when it goes to NJ.

Buses are not allowed to stay in NYC.  We also watch Christmas movies to and from NYC :-).

Extra Option:  Classes at Broadway Dance Center-$20.00 per class

To take these classes, you must be on the Elite Team, in the Sr Line or Alumni because that is how Broadway Dance Center sets up the age groups for their drop-in classes.

There are variety of classes offered during the weekend and we will discuss what is available when they post their December schedule.  Great place to take some awesome classes from amazing instructors.  Viewing areas are also offered at the studio for parent observers.

So, pick which hotel option you want to do for this trip, add in your Radio City ticket, your amount for the hotel and bus.  If taking any Broadway Dance classes, add those in, as well.

That will be your cost for the trip.  Usually, it's just one flat price, but this year we have different options to choose.

Example-Christmas Show Spectacular-$85.00, Quad room-$135.00, Bus-$115.00=$335.00 pp, Add Stage Door Tour @ $13.50 per person, Extra Option-Classes at Broadway Dance Center-$20.00 per class

Please let me know ASAP (by Friday, Oct. 14th), if you are interested in attending.  I have deadlines to meet for paying for the rooms reserved and keeping our space for the Radio City Christmas Show Spectacular.  The cost of the trip will be divided into 3 payments.  Once I know how many are interested, I can post a payment schedule.  the show tickets and hotel deposit will be due soon.  Your deposit is due immediately to hold your space.  Please be advised:  All deposits are non-refundable.  If you are unable to attend, you may have someone go in your place, but I am not able to get any refunds on the show tickets, the hotel or the bus.  No exceptions!

Invite your friends and family.   All welcome!!

Hello Dancers and Parents,

The first meeting of Maine Dance Teachers Workshop is this Sunday, October 9th in Waterville.

This is for students 8 years and older.  It has always been for students 9 years and older, until this year.  Any students attending should have a minimum of 2 years of dance training, especially if they are on the younger side.  It is a long day for the younger ones with 4 hours of classes, however very beneficial.  See the attached flyers.

For all the dancers, it is a great opportunity to have teachers from out-of-state and other locations in Maine, but only having to travel to Waterville.

If you have attended before, notice this is at a new location.

***Any dancer attending all 4 workshops will receive a trophy presented at the recital in May.  Anyone doing 3 or 4 Maine Dance Teachers Workshops, will do an extra number in the recital.

The workshops are held in October, November, January and February.

Any students under 12 planning to attend who have not attended a MDTC workshop before, please speak with Miss Morita or Miss Denise.

***WATCH FOR INFO ABOUT OUR GUEST TEACHERS, ERICK "SPIDER" PAUL AND ABBY PAUL, FORMER YOUNG AMERICANS, COMING TO THE STUDIO THE 1ST WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER.

SPECIAL CLASSES WILL BE HOSTED ON THE WEEKEND BY MORITA'S SCHOOL OF DANCE***  Abby and Erick are from California.
